Mirror Help for Portraits

Not long ago, I had the opportunity to meet Helen Correll, an artist and illustrator from South Carolina. I have admired the realism of her art, and she was happy to share some of her techniques for portrait drawing. One of the things she mentioned was that as you work on or finish up a portrait, hold it up to a mirror. You don’t even need to hold it up against the original photo; just hold up the drawing itself. In doing so, you’ll be able to see anything that’s not quite right with your picture. I tried it as I was drawing a portrait, and it works – it’s amazing what you can see.

You can view examples of Helen’s work at HelenCorrell.com.
