Illustrating Shaping Up the Year

Shaping Up the Year was a fun book to work on. Because the text features a search for shapes for little ones, I decided to to the illustrations in cut paper to give them a sturdy, solid feel. A little mouse on every page tied all the pictures together.

To create the illustrations, I first sketched out several thumbnail images of each page, then decided which ones I liked the best. I sketched the image on copy paper, and when I was satisfied, I made a couple of extra copies. I used the extras as patterns for the final paper pieces (I used colored cardstock for those). You can find a great tutorial on creating a cut paper illustration here.
